Central's Cobbs Wins 2009 Ford Award
Thursday, December 17, 2009
Central quarterback Demarco Cobbs is the 2009 recipient of the Ford Award, given yearly to the top high school football player in eastern Oklahoma.
Cobbs was one of the most highly recruited athletes in the state of Oklahoma. The quarterback/runningback/wide receiver/do a little bit of everything guy can and did hurt teams in many ways.
Demarco could have received the weekly nomination several times during the regular season, but his performance in week five against Tahlequah was the one that really stood out.
Cobbs rushed for 246 yards and four touchdowns, rushed for a pair of two-point conversions and also got in the end zone via a 95-yard kickoff return.
For the season, Cobbs had 637 yards and seven touchdowns through the air, 1,404 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground and also returned seven kickoffs for an average of 50 yards per return and three scores.
He led Central to an 8-and-2 regular season record before falling to eventual Class 5A runner-up Bixby 17-13 in the first round of the playoffs.
Cobbs was recently selected to participate in the Under Armour All-America game, which will be played in St. Petersburg, Florida. He's the only state player chosen for the game, which will be televised at 10 a.m. by ESPN on January second.
Cobbs initially gave his verbal commitment to play at Tennessee, but later changed his commitment to Texas, where he's expected to play wide receiver.
The online Ford Award vote went to Salina tailback Darren Pettit, who garnered 57-percent of the more than 26-hundred votes cast.
