Oklahoma Outlasts Texas In 71st Oil Bowl
 June 22, 2008
Duncan quarterback Trent Wilkins' 65-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter helped Oklahoma to a 17-16 win over Texas in the 71st Annual Oil Bowl Saturday in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Wilkins, who will play at Tulsa in the fall, scored on the final play of the third quarter, snapping a 10-10 tie. Texas scored midway through the fourth quarter on a two-yard run by Dreu Ashley, but the extra point was missed.

The Texans had another shot late in the fourth, but a bad snap led to a missed field goal and Oklahoma came away with just its 18th victory in the 71-year history of the game.

Wilkins was named the game's offensive most valuable player, rushing for 105 yards on 11 carries and also completing 3-of-8 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. The defensive player of the game went to R.J. Bartley of Grove and Zack Wallace of Hilldale.

Bartley led the Oklahoma team with eight tackles while Wallace had four stops, including a sack and also recovered a fumble.

Texas took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 34-yard field goal by Ben Parks. Wilkins gave Oklahoma its first lead of the game on an 18-yard touchdown pass to Rush Springs' Brian Loyd. Union's Tress Way added the extra point to make it 7-3 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Texas regained the lead when Nick Florence scored on a four-yard run, but it didn't last long. Way, who will be kicking for the Sooners soon, booted a 50-yard field goal to knot the score.

Oklahoma kept the momentum as just moments later, Midwest City's John Flanders stepped in front of a Florence pass, giving Oklahoma the ball back. The ensuing drive would be capped with Wilkins' 65-yard scamper.

The win was the first for Oklahoma since 2005.

Other eastern Oklahoma players in the game included Muskogee quarterback Trae Cook, who completed four of seven passes for 20 yards his Rougher teammate Shjuan Richardson had one carry for ten yards. A third Muskogee player was Travon Brooks, who had four tackles on defense.

Wagoner's Durrell Parker had six tackles. Brent Childs of Tahlequah had five stops.

East Central tailback Kenny Session had 35 yards on seven attempts. Broken Bow had teammates Mitchell Bailey -- who made six tackles -- and Kyle Beam who had one bringdown. Trey Lippe of Vinita had two tackles and Tony Gillespie of Jenks had one tackle.
