Bixby Rallies To Beat Cobbs-less Central
Friday, November 13, 2009

The Bixby Spartans advanced to the Class 5A quarterfinals with a 17-13 win over the Central Braves Friday night at Lee Snider Field in Bixby.

The Braves were forced to play without their star quarterback Demarco Cobbs the entire second half after the state's most prized recruit suffered an injury late in the second quarter.

Bixby took an early 7-0 lead on an 18-yard run by DeWitt Jennings with 9:37 left in the first quarter. But, just two plays after the ensuing kickoff, Central tailback Tyron Garth bolted 74 yards for a touchdown.

The extra point was missed however, leaving the Spartans ahead, 7-6.

In the second quarter, Bixby kicker Jack Fiscus booted a 47-yard field goal to give the Spartans a 10-6 advantage.

Cobbs injury came on a long run with 4:30 left in the second quarter, a long run in which he wasn't touched. He came up limping and visibly hurt as he tried to make his way to the sidelines. He finally ended up falling to the turf and had to be helped off the field.

The injury was to his right calf and we're told it's an injury he's had before, but isn't considered a serious injury. However, it kept him out of the lineup for the second half.

On the very next play after the injury, Garth scored on a 13-yard run to give Central its first lead, 13-to-10 at halftime.

The only scoring in the second half came on a 49-yard touchdown run by Bixby quarterback Kevin Lamb. Lamb's touchdown gave Bixby its sixth straight opening round playoff win

The 10th-ranked Spartans will play Shawnee in the quarterfinals. Shawnee stayed unbeaten with a 43-13 win over Altus Friday night.

Central (8-3) was making its first playoff appearance in six years.
