Bartlesville's Playoff Run Continues
Friday, November 13, 2009
Former Owasso coach Ron Smith brought his current team, Bartlesville, to Owasso Stadium Friday night and came away with a win against his former club, 14-to-7 to advance to the Class 6A quarterfinals.
The Bruins offense is used to getting all the headlines. But, it was the defense that really shined Friday night. In the first quarter, Bartlesville knocked Rams quarterback Joe Lindsey from the game with a crushing hit that forced him to the sidelines with a concussion.
Bartlesville (9-2) was finally able to break a scoreless tie with just 72 seconds left until halftime. Quarterback Kirby Schoenthaler hit tight end Brad Martin with a seven-yard pass for a 7-0 advantage at halftime.
The Bruins then came out in the third quarter with a long drive that ended with a four-yard touchdown run by Schoenthaler for a 14-0 lead.
Owasso (6-5) finally got on the board late in the third quarter when Aaron Colvin scored on a three yard run to cut Bartlesville's lead in half.
But, the Rams' next scoring opportunity was thwarted when the Bruins sacked backup quarterback Kason Key on fourth down. All that was left was for Bartlesville to get a couple of first downs, which they did, allowing them to run out the clock.
Bartlesville will travel to play Southmoore for next week's playoff game. The Saber Cats edged Lawton 34-32 Friday night to improve to 10-1.
