Bartlesville's Run Ends At Southmoore
Saturday, November 21, 2009
One of the most successful seasons in Bartlesville history came to an end with a 49-28 loss at Southmoore Friday night in Moore.
The Bruins (9-3) suffered through a tough second quarter and could never regain traction.
After Kirby Schoenthaler's 60-yard touchdown pass to Jack Wiseman in the second quarter pulled Bartlesville even at 7-7, the Saber Cats (11-1) ripped off 21 straight points.
It was 21-7 when Austin Brooks intercepted Schoenthaler in Southmoore territory. Seconds later, Saber Cats quarterback Kendal Thompson found Derek Serowski with a 59-yard bomb for a 28-7 advantage.
Schoenthaler responded on the next offensive play, zipping a 66-yard touchdown pass to Blake Hood to pull the Bruins within a pair of scores.
But, Southmoore scored on its next possession, then intercepted Schoenthaler to end two more Bartlesville drives and took the 35-14 lead into the locker room.
Southmoore tacked on two more scores in the third quarter to leave no doubt of the game's outcome. While Bartlesville scored twice in the fourth quarter, it's Southmoore who will advance to face top-ranked Jenks.
Bartlesville was hoping for a rematch with the #1 Trojans, who defeated the Bruins 63-40 in week eight of the regular season. But after suffering four turnovers and allowing 630 yards of total offense, it wasn't meant to be.
In just their second season of existence, the Saber Cats have advanced to the Class 6A semifinals. Now, they'll face the toughest opponent in their 22-game history when they take on perennial powerhouse Jenks.
The Trojans improved to 12-and-0 Friday night, scoring twice in the fourth quarter to beat Edmond Memorial, 28-14.
Against two common opponents this season (Bartlesville and Edmond Memorial), both are 2-and-0. Jenks outscored the two 91-54 while Southmoore had a 69-40 advantage.
