Bixby Tops Guthrie To Advance To Title Game
Friday, November 27, 2009
DeWitt Jennings' 64-yard touchdown run with 1:16 left put the finishing touches on Bixby's 27-20 victory over Guthrie Friday night in the Class 5A semifinals in Stillwater.
Guthrie ( ) had just scored two minutes earlier on a five-yard run by Derrick Kelly to pull the Blue Jays within one, 21-20. But, the extra point was off the mark.
Guthrie took an initial 7-0 lead on Kelly's five-yard scoring run early in the second quarter. Jennings knotted the score later in the second on a three-yard touchdown run.
The teams were tied 7-7 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Bixby quarterback Kevin Lamb connected with Trevor Bryant on a 35-yard touchdown pass for a 14-7 advantage.
But, Guthrie responded when Kelly scored on a short run with just over a minute left in the period.
Lamb later put the Spartans ahead 21-14 on a six-yard touchdown run.
With the win, Bixby advances to the Class 5A championship game, where they will face off against Carl Albert. The Titans defeated previously unbeaten El Reno 44-7 in the other semifinal game Friday night.
Carl Albert and Bixby have met in the playoffs in each of the previous two seasons with the Titans winning 44-6 in the quarterfinals last year and Bixby taking a 37-31 victory in the 2007 quarterfinals.
This is Bixby's third trip to the title game in the past five seasons. Their last two have ended in disappointment, but they hope to end that streak next week.
