Union Destroys Jenks For Repeat
Friday, December 04, 2009
Chase Boyce scores to give Union a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.
Chase Boyce rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another as second-ranked Union defeated previously unbeaten and number one ranked Jenks 52-19 in the Class 6A championship game Friday night at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
The Redskins (13-1) used trickery, defense and turnovers to lead 32-0 at halftime and cruised to their sixth state championship and fifth in eight years.
On the opening kickoff, Thomas Roberson caught a throwback from the other side of the field and raced untouched to the end zone for a very quick 7-0 lead.
Jenks gave the ball back on its second play from scrimmage when the snap got away from quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen and was recovered by the Redskins. A few plays later, Boyce scored on a six-yard run for a 14-0 lead.
After a Jenks punt, Boyce scored again, this time on a 46-yard run to give the Redskins a 21-0 cushion after one quarter.
The defense then came up with a big play, sacking Kollmorgen in the end zone for a safety. Union was held out of the end zone on its ensuing possession, but Cole Way booted a 37-yard field goal for a 26-0 lead.
Former Jenks running back Colton Dost, now in a Redskins uniform, later scored just before halftime to give Union a 32-0 lead.
Jenks finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when Zack Langer scored on a 19-yard run. But, Union responded immediately as Kale Pearson returned the ensuing kickoff for a 90-yard touchdown.
Jenks would return to the end zone later in the third on an 11-yard run by Kollmorgen, cutting the lead to 39-13. Union again responded early in the fourth quarter as Boyce tossed a 13-yard scoring pass to Deontae Morris for a 45-13 advantage.
Jenks moved inside the five-yard line on its next drive, but Langer fumbled the ball and the Redskins recovered. But, Boyce made his only mistake of the night as he was intercepted by Jacob Bertelli, who returned it 13 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion pass failed, leaving the Trojans behind, 45-19.
Dost tacked on a late touchdown to push the Union lead to 52-19.
The 52 points is the second most points ever scored in the series. Only 1998's regular season meeting topped that in which Union won 55-45. The 33-point blowout was the largest margin of victory in the series since Union won by a score of 37-0 in 2003.
This is the 14th straight time either Union or Jenks has won the Class 6A championship.
