Tony Peters is a former Pauls Valley, University of Oklahoma and NFL defensive back Tony Peters..

Peters was born on April 28, 1953 in Oklahoma City and was an All-State selection at Pauls Valley following the 1970 season and also played basketball and ran track and field for the Panthers.

In 1971, he signed with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, playing two seasons for the Golden Norsemen and intercepting 13 passes -- ten coming during his sophomore season.

In his last game for NEO, Peters earned the Most Valuable Player award in the Green Country Bowl.

He went on to play at the University of Oklahoma, where he earned second-team All-Big 8 in 1974 -- the same season the Sooners won the national championship.

He was also selected a starter at strong safety in the East-West game and Senior Bowl as a senior.

In 1975, the Cleveland Browns selected Peters with the 82nd overall pick in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. Peters started all 14 games as a rookie and appeared in 58 games in four seasons, intercepting five passes as a Brown.

In 1979, he was traded to the Washington Redskins and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1982 when the Redskins won Super Bowl XVII against the Miami Dolphins.

He was suspended for the 1983 season after pleading guilty to conspiracy to traffic cocaine, but was reinstated in 1984 and went on to play two more seasons for the Redskins, including interceptions in back-to-back weeks during the 1985 season.

After football Tony returned to Oklahoma, completed his education and went into coaching. He was hired as an assistant coach at Sapulpa in 1995 and a year later became head coach at Tulsa McLain, taking a team that had finished 0-10 and winning ten games in two seasons.

In 1998, he was hired at Muskogee and in three seasons, the Roughers were 15-18, including two winning seasons and three playoff appearances.

He also went on to coach at Tulsa Central and Tulsa Hale, completing his career with 38 victories in eleven seasons.

In 2023, Peters was inducted into the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Athletic Hall of Fame.
