He signed with the University of Tulsa, where he played cornerback before moving to free safety as a senior. As a freshman, he was second in the nation in punt returns with a 15.5 yards per return average, one of which went for a 59-yard touchdown in Tulsa's 24-10 win over New Mexico State.

In 1988, Gordon had two more interceptions, recovered a fumble, had a sack and also averaged 14.9 yards per punt return on 14 kickoff returns.

His best season as a defender came in 1989 when he started 13 of 14 games he appeared in and had four interceptions and forced a fumble.

A shoulder injury limited Gordon to just five games played for the Falcons in 1990 and he was ultimately waived, but claimed by the New England Patriots late in the season.

He played two seasons in New England, making 15 starts in two seasons, recovering a pair of fumbles in 1991.

In 67 career NFL games played, Gordon finished with eight interceptions, four fumble recoveries and a sack.
