Derrick Locke is a former Hugo, Kentucky and professional running back.
Locke was born in Oklahoma City on May 30, 1989 and attended Hugo High School, where he was a four-year starter for the Buffaloes. As a freshman, he played running back before moving to quarterback as a sophomore.
Playing alongside brother Delvonsha, Derrick helped Hugo make the playoffs as a sophomore. With Delvonsha at running back and Derrick at QB, the pair combined for nearly 3,000 yards rushing in 2004.
After Delvonsha graduated in 2006, Derrick moved back to running back for his senior season, earning All-State honors after leading Class 3A in rushing with 3,275 yards and 51 touchdowns.
He completed his career at Hugo with 4,865 yards and 79 touchdowns.
In addition to his football exploits, Derrick was also a spectacular long jumper, setting the Oklahoma state record and recording the longest jump in the nation in 2007 when he jumped 25-feet, four and three quarters inches.
It was that feat that caught the eye of University of Kentucky assistant track coach James Thomas. Derrick was offered a track scholarship with the opportunity to play football as well.
By the time the summer was over, the track scholarship was converted to football as Locke won the team's Iron Cat Award for dedication, conditioning and leadership in the weight room.
In four seasons, Locke rushed for 2,618 yards and 22 touchdowns, added 883 yards and three touchdowns receiving and had two kickoff return touchdowns and a career return average of 27.1 yards.
He earned second-team All-Southeastern Conference in 2009 after rushing for 907 yards and six touchdowns. As a senior, he missed four games with a shoulder injury, but still finished with 887 yards and ten touchdowns.
He also participated in track and field at Kentucky, setting the school's outdoor long jump record with a jump of 25-feet, three and a quarter inches in 2008.
Locke signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2011, but a neck injury caused him to fail his physical. He later signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, but was waived prior to the start of the season.
He joined the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders in 2012.
After his playing career, Locke returned to Oklahoma, joining the staff of the John Marshall Bears as running backs coach.
Locke remains eighth on Kentucky's all-time rushing list and tied for fifth in all-time touchdowns scored. His state record in the long jump is also un-broken.
